Doug is a grandfather of five and a retired high school biology teacher and college outing program director. He has 50 years in fire service (Assistant Chief), as well as 40 years in EMS (TN Advanced EMT, WEMT). Doug has been teaching whitewater paddling and sailing at Camp Merrie-Woode in North Carolina for43 years. Doug paddles and sails long distance races (won and placed second in the WaterTribe Everglades Challenge — 300 miles — in a sailing canoe). He does some freelance writing for boating magazines and helped edit the Wilderness and Rescue Medicine book (because I’m so picky about grammar!). Doug also builds wooden boats and volunteers in land conservation, education, and humanitarian groups. Doug started teaching for WMA because he likes their approach to learning.
